Advantages of Rights-Managed Images
While the bargain-basement pricing of royalty-free photography may be alluring, rights-managed photography enables a level of quality, certainty and exclusivity that can be crucial for important projects.
History & Exclusivity
Every rights-managed photograph has a fully-documented history. You can steer clear of images that have been used already in your geographical area or those that have been run by your competitors.
When you’ve found just right image for your needs, you can also bundle various degrees of exclusivity with your rights-managed license. For example, you can ensure that nobody in your geographical region (or even world-wide) will use the photograph at the same time that you are.
In contrast, royalty-free photography is distributed far and wide, oftentimes to numerous customers, and can be used in numerous applications with no limitations on when and where. Royalty-free images also cannot provide any image history or any details into how an image has previously been used.
How Do Rights-Managed Licenses Work?
Rights-managed image licensing sets certain limitations on use that conform to your precise needs. These criteria include, but are not limited to:
- image size
- medium (print, online, etc)
- area of distribution
- location of placement (where applicable)
In order to determine the scope and price of the rights-managed license, you will be asked to provide the details of your desired use. Discounts can be negotiated when licensing multiple images. As mentioned earlier, different levels of exclusivity are also available.
